FAFSA - The Free Application for Financial Aid

  • The FAFSA is a form that should be filled out by all prospective college students in January of the students’ senior year.
    • This is an application for grants, work-study (work on campus and get paid), and loans.
    • It is specifically based off of a child’s parents’ income.
  • Although there is no deadline it is best to fill the form out in January as it is a first come, first serve basis in how the money available is divided
    • Filling the form out on-line is the quickest and most convenient way, but paper based forms are available starting in January. http://www.fafsa.ed.gov
    • Students must obtain a pin number early in order to fill out the form. Make the request on the same same website.
    • Request a pin number now and it will be mailed to you in a week or two, but check on the website to make sure. This can be requested at any time, so don't wait until January!
  • Students should fill out the FAFSA regardless of income, as it is good to have on file in case of emergencies and some scholarships may require it be filled out.
  • Listen to the daily announcements or contact TMCC or UNR at the beginning of January, as both schools usually offer a Sunday in January to help parents fill this form out.
